There was a time that smoking was considered totally acceptable, harmless and even encouraged. Til the results were brazenly obvious after a few decades. Same for drinking responsibly. Social awareness about drinking and driving, the destructive effects of alcoholism, etc. are now very well known. Social attitudes have gradually changed, and the laws changed with them. Every culture has acceptable/unacceptable behaviors and mores ingrained in the fabric of their society, whether it’s regarding child abuse, religion, sexual behavior, domestic violence, drug use, crimes, even water usage. And one day, not soon enough for me, we will consider eating responsibly to be on the list.

What? Eating responsibly? I get hungry, I eat what I want, who cares, it’s my body….right?

Wrong….it’s far more than each person’s body.

Google Monsanto. Do you know what you’re eating, who you’re supporting with your purchases at the grocery store or farmer’s market? Lies, lies, and more lies. Their power and influence has legally and forcefully crept into each of our lives, and I for one think it is appalling. How about the ‘farm’ animals? More lies. Think your eggs are from “free-range” chickens?  Think the animals don’t suffer when they are demanded to produce more than is naturally possible? Think the pig or cow that provided your dinner was treated and killed humanely? Big Ag placates us with those lies. Or maybe you just don’t care. In which case you need to get the fuck off my page right now and drive your stupid ass through McDonalds pick-up window for your daily dose of poison.

For those of you still here, you can find more info easily yourself…it’s everywhere. There are tons of videos and articles about the horrendous treatment of these animals, if you can stomach it. Why is it swept under the rug in our culture? Because most people don’t want to stop and think about where that chicken sandwich came from. It seems to be completely acceptable to see chopped up animals in the store. What if that was your dog or cat or horse? Doesn’t it bother anyone else? We just keep buying and buying, and therefore they keep supplying and supplying. It is a perverse culture we live in. There are plenty of cultures who do not practice the barbaric treatment of animals that is accepted, every-day ‘business’ here. Animal agriculture also takes a devastating toll on the earth and is a very inefficient use of resources. I am not preaching vegetarianism or veganism….but at least if you are going to eat animals and animal products, it’s your responsibility to make sure you’re not indirectly, unknowingly supporting the atrocious practices of abuse that are commonplace. They cover up the truth so you’ll come back tomorrow for another Whopper. We are all being fed a load of lies along with our food…in labeling, marketing, and in what’s NOT being advertised.

I believe that most people would actually be horrified by the truth. Big Ag knows this. They keep the processing plants FAR away from the public eye for a reason. Pretty packaging with a nice farm house, big red barn, cows and chickens grazing happily in a pasture…..says “Buy me, I’m safe and healthy and good for you, and no animals were hurt, I promise!” More lies.

It was just a few years ago that we could all light up in an enclosed airplane and puff away for hours, and the non-smokers had no choice but to suffer. Awareness and public outcry changed the laws and our perception of it, and now it seems ridiculous that it was ever legal. It is my hope and belief that someday the same fate will come to responsible eating. For all of us, all the animals, and the planet.

Oh did I mention….there was a twin. The twin died (was that nature telling them something?). They were horrified and sad, so the surviving baby is all the more “precious”. But they are not in a position to have children at all. Yet everyone is “so concerned” about this little fetus that didn’t ask to be in this situation in the first place! I stand by my theory of IQ tests and licenses for breeding dammit!

It’s not their fault that they’re making completely unnatural decisions. We live in a society that condones and promotes this mindset – all life is precious, and I agree – but not just the lives of us selfish humans with our inflated sense of self-importance. That is exactly why there is natural selection, and it has been natural to this planet for millions of years. So be it. We wonder what is wrong with our sick-care system, yet we (modern) humans have somehow decided we are worthy of living and procreating outside the laws of nature. We are the only species who breeds beyond its means of sustainability, and we have deemed ourselves, and our helpless, sickly fetuses, worthy of the “right” to live. What about all the damage that thinking and behavior does to the already-broken system and limited resources? What about all the pampers and plastic toys and packaging that is going to be created, wasted, and “thrown away” because of this child, assuming it survives? Multiply that times several hundred thousand a DAY. What about the BIG picture? Why do we keep doing the very things that are against nature, and expect it to work out ok, heartbroken when it doesn’t? Oh that’s right, because we’re humans, we have RIGHTS ya know! We haven’t yet figured out that we are a small part of nature, not lords and masters of it. If only people’s IQ’s matched their egos.

A huge part of the process is proving that the immigrant has a reason to be here, some contribution to make to our country. Talent, job, spouse, etc. This is a long, hoop-jumping rigamaroll. I know, I went through it with someone, firsthand, every step of the way. I also know the tears and goosebumps that accompany a citizenship ceremony at the INS office. It is indeed a very moving and memorable occasion for everyone involved. And I also remember the horror stories my dear Cuban friend Ana told me about her entire family’s struggle to even land upon U.S. soil….she died a few years ago, at 28, fighting for her/your/our freedom, but that’s another post on another blog, sometime….

So I understand why less fortunate people want to live here….but should they be allowed simply because they made it across the desert or water in time to have a baby on US soil? I don’t care if you’re brown or black or green and have 3 heads….but what if millions of Polish people, or Germans, or French, or Australian people did the same thing? We would not allow it…so why do we open our arms to illegal Mexican people just because they live closer or have “easier” access? They still should have to prove that they have legal permission to be here, just like I immediately have to prove I have a driver’s license when I get pulled over driving my car. We all have to prove we are legally allowed to do certain things in daily life. I see this no differently. Legal immigration is an amazingly awesome thing. Illegal immigration is….um, illegal. Go by the rules people. I was born here and I have to too.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel terrible sadness for everyone in the situation – and this is exactly WHY I don’t like continuing to see it. We all commonly understand and accept that spaying and neutering our pets is necessary to prevent having to kill “unwanted” animals. I am in no way suggesting we kill any “unwanted” people any more than I approve of killing “unwanted” animals…but there is no obligation to help them keep breeding so that more people can be born and then die a miserable death, like their animal counterparts – in fact it is the OPPOSITE THAT IS OUR OBLIGATION!

So why do we feel an obligation to? Often it is religion and cultural mores that prevent women from having control over their reproduction, rape, lack of access to birth control, as well as ignorance, propagating the crises. I know if I was not able to feed myself or find clean water, the absolute LAST thing I would want is to bring a child I love into that situation. Who would?! Rather than spending millions on just food, the money would be better spent on birth control, education, and social reform. Well-meaning people give their hard-earned money to “help” the situation….when in actuality, it is only exacerbating the problem. I’ll keep my dollars til I know it actually PREVENTS a child rather than feeds one.

No one would be hungry and suffering if they weren’t HERE in the first place!

2. Remember the good times. Treat your partner like you did at the beginning of your relationship. Make a list of all the things you used to enjoy doing together and add any new fantasies to the list. Plan for them and make them happen.

3. Help your partner feel more loved and secure in your love so that he or she can open up to you and express feelings and ideas without fear of being attacked or judged. Compliment, praise, give a hug. Small gestures make the grandest statements. Think about THEIR point of view.

5. Be present. Train your mind to stay in the moment — not at work, thinking about the new color you want to paint your kitchen, or how it’s time to take the dog to the vet.

6. Pay attention to your physical appearance. Take the time to stay in shape and look good for each other. It does matter. This can be very daunting, but well worth the effort.
